Women’s History Month
The evolution of a month to honor women began on March 8, 1857, when garment workers in New York City staged one of the first organized protests by working women. Women’s groups internationally have designed time to mark this day. In an effort to begin adding women’s history into educational curricula, a Women’s History Week was initiated in 1978. By 1981, the week was a national event, and in 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to include all of March as a celebration of women. The 2012 Theme Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment honors the countless teachers who work every day to educate and empower girls and boys, young and old.
Irish American Heritage Month
A month to honor the contributions of over 44 million Americans who trace their roots to Ireland. Celebrations include celebrating St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) with parades, family gathering, masses, dances, etc. For more information visit the Irish-American Heritage Month website at http://irishamericanheritage.com/.
“One Thing” Diversity and Inclusion Initiative is being promoted by the Riverpoint Diversity Events Subcommittee to encourage and challenge Riverpoint’s faculty, staff, and students to do “One Thing” to foster and support diversity and inclusion at Riverpoint (WSUS/EWU). Riverpoint Diversity Bulletin Board is located in SAC, first floor by Aracelia’s. Announcements, posters, and flyers announcing Riverpoint, community, and WSUS Diversity Club activities/events will be posted on this bulletin board. The Nursing Diversity Committee’s Diversity Bulletin Board is located on the 2nd floot of the Nursing Building near the elevators.
Stand Against Racism
Join the YWCA in taking a stand against racism on Friday, April 27, 2012. Organizations in Spokane County are invited to become a participating site by hosting their own “Stand Against Racism) or by joining the YWCA and their activities on April 27, 2012. For more information visit http://standagainstracism.org. A few of the Spokane organizations that participated in the 2011 Stand include: WSUS, Bates Drug Store. Gonzaga School of Law and Unity Multicultural Education Center, STCU, Goodwill Industries, Institute for Extended Learning. Spokane Community College, Rogers High School, Skils’Kin, The Native Project and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Lasting Heritage
Lasting Heritage uses personal stories and human-made objects to articulate the spiritual and visceral links between ancient people, modern tribal people and the land. Hundreds of historic cultural objects, modern works by American Indian artists, and historic photographs fill two galleries.
