Kenya: Top Celebs to Head Machakos Entertainment Board

Some of Kenya’s top personalities from entertainment and PR have been appointed board members of the newly formed Machakos Entertainment Centre for Film, Media, Music and the Arts. According to a Kenya gazette notice dated October 11, Dr Alfred Mutua, the Governor of Machakos county, appointed a star-studded team to the board.
They include Kiss 100 breakfast presenter Caroline Mutoko, popular comedian Churchill, former CEO of Kenya Film Commission Peter Mutie, singer Ken wa Maria, Katua Nzile, a TV manager and producer, PR practitioner Angela Ng’ang’a- Mumo, Pulse editor Stevens Muendo and Kentice Tikolo, the chair of the Public Relations Society of Kenya.
The acting CEO and secretary to the board is Victor Mwalakha Mwenya Muniafu, the chair of the Kenya Film and TV Professional Association. “The appointments take effect immediately,” Mutua said. “We expect Machawood to generate over 30,000 jobs and Sh500 million to Machakos County in the next one year.”
Asked about the appointment, Mutoko who serves in four boards – all of them international – told Word Is, “I’m yet to see a letter about that. Remember I have to clear all board appointments with the CEO (Radio Africa Group) and our board… So until I see a letter with terms of reference, I honestly can’t comment.”
However, Muendo said “the mood of the organisation is to bring in stakeholders from the industry to build a stage that will be a beacon of entertainment not only in Kenya but the rest of the world. Mutua’s vision is that big.” The board’s initial task is to “set up the centre so that it can start its operations. I expect that by December 31, 2013, the centre will have been fully established and functioning,” Mutua sad in a statement.
The centre’s main mandate is to make Machakos County the premier location for entertainment in Africa. It will promote and attract filmmakers, musicians, artistes and media so as to grow the industry. “The government of Machakos has set aside 50 acres of land in our new Machakos City for the centre. Machawood has also been allocated an initial Sh60 million this financial year for its start-up operations,” Mutua said.
