Will Globalization Destroy Black America?

The lack of response to globalization by Black America is frightening and troubling. While much of the world has adapted to the new-world economy and new-world standards of existence, most of Black America is still operating much the same way it did in the 1950s and 1960s. But now, throughout Black communities in America, there is a whisper campaign by Black people who don’t know each other and Black people who live in different parts of the country, saying to each other, “We are in trouble!” We know it and the rest of the world knows it! Black America, as we know it, is in danger of not surviving globalization.

In the 21st century, there are only two kinds of people. Not Black or White, or rich or poor, or foreign or national. The two kinds of people in the world today are those who are educated and those who are not. Although education has become the new currency of exchange in the 21st century, the old American educational paradigm stopped working decades ago for Black Americans. Simply sending Black children to American schools without a clear purpose or goal has contributed to the demise of the Black community. Black America watched formerly third-world countries catapult over America to become educational super powers while America rested on its old, stale educational laurels and fell way behind much of the world in educational performance. And because Black America unthinkingly depended on the American education system to educate its children, we have fallen way behind.

The solution

The solution to the issue of Black America’s poor response to globalization is to 1) Deconstruct value systems that have caused Black people to arrive at the precipice of non-existence; 2) Construct value systems that will rebuild the Black family as a purveyor of positive values, cultures, mores and education, and re-establish the Black family as the primary and most important social unit of our culture and society; 3) Embrace education as the highest value in the Black community; 4) Effectively manage the negative cultural influences that hugely impact the thinking and actions of Black boys; and 5) Understand that for the rest of existence, change is a required part of the living process. The faster Black America is able to put this plan into action, adopt these new principles and manage change, the more likely we will survive.

Today, many Black people seem to be having “cosmic flashbacks” to our time in slavery, which was the first crude effort at globalization that helped to set the stage for today’s globalization. For years, Black America was buffered from modern globalization by political boundaries and economic barriers. Now globalization has come to our country, our cities, our communities, onto our blocks and into our homes, schools and workplaces. Globalization has happened, whether Black America is ready for it or not. We still have time to make the necessary changes that will guarantee that Black people will survive into the 21st century and that we will thrive in this global economy. But there is not much time. With globalization, Black America has entered into the “Educate or Die” era. In this era, there are only two questions worth answering: “Will we change? Can we survive?” How we emerge from this era is up to us.

My name is Angela Bukenya, a Clinton School of Public Service graduate student. I was born and raised in Uganda, but currently residing in the USA.

In addition to the skills i have gained as a student, i have been working to raise funds to assist the Nakisenyi Foundation Nursery and Boarding School in Uganda, based on a needs assessment, to help improve their education. Of immediate need for 254 students, is textbooks that they can use for the entire year that will cost less than $10 each.
I am therefore asking everyone with the same passion, to join me in accomplishing this goal through a donation of any amount.

(The Root) — The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., is still at the top of the news cycle, weeks after Adam Lanza, 20, murdered 20 unsuspecting schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators with weapons purchased by and registered to his mother, Nancy Lanza. The young man shot her in the head four times in her home as she slept before heading to Sandy Hook to embark on the second-deadliest school massacre in U.S. history.

Nancy, described as a gun enthusiast, has become the recent object of fascination, with many wondering why she would keep guns in her house at all and take her son to the shooting range, knowing that he was “troubled.”

While I’m not interested in embarking on a “blame the mother” narrative, particularly when very little is known about the Lanza family dynamics (i.e., Adam’s relationship with his father, brother, grandparents and so on), I do think that Nancy’s actions are indicative of a practice that I call “when bad parenting happens to good people.” (In this case, “good people” could refer to Nancy or the victims of the Newtown shooting.)

It’s a reality seen as pretty much standard by people who work with or are regularly exposed to children and young adults. It is the idea that common sense isn’t always common, especially when it comes to parenting. As a college-level educator, I have the opportunity to see great parenting and bad parenting, up close and personal.

There are all types of parents, with diverse ideologies, philosophies, worldviews and approaches to parenting. Some take a laissez-faire position, allowing their children to explore and experience college life without much interference or direction. Other parents have a hands-on approach, staying in constant contact with their children and dictating nearly every movement they make.

It’s obvious when parents have taught their children boundaries, self-control, integrity and a sense of responsibility for their actions. Meanwhile, it seems as if other parents have not taught their kids much of anything — such as to speak when spoken to, which in my book constitutes having basic manners.

Some parents do so much for their children that those students have difficulty making a simple decision (e.g., going to class instead of sleeping in), let alone accepting the consequences of poor decision-making (e.g., sleeping in instead of going to class). I have learned that, like professors, not all parents are created equal, and each one has a different parenting style — one that may not necessarily work for the rest of the world.

Nancy Lanza is an example of this phenomenon. Her poor judgment and profound lack of common sense as a parent (keeping guns around a “troubled child”) had tragic consequences for a lot of people, including herself. To be clear, not all children with Asperger’s syndrome are dangerous, but parents who are overwhelmed and in over their heads (dealing with children they are not trained or equipped to handle) certainly are troubled and in need of help. Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, which is why parenting classes exist.

You don’t have to be a school psychologist or a college professor to identify everyday examples of bad parenting. Head to the local grocery store or department store, or spend a few minutes at the airport waiting for a flight, and you’ll see that good parents are not born; like good children, they are made.

While some cultural critics are willing to try to find the correlation between bad deeds and either guns or exposure to violence in media, some aren’t as willing to explore the correlation between the rise in violent acts among young adults and the type of parenting they receive. Why?

Maybe it is because many of us would find our own parenting styles implicated. What happened in Sandy Hook and continues to happen in Chicago and other cities teeming with violent crime has to be dealt with on multiple levels, and parenting or the lack thereof should not be left out of the equation. Otherwise I fear we’ll continue to see examples of bad parenting happening to good people, long after the tragedy in Newtown stops being a hot news story.

A Mother’s Love: Nothing Is Greater

For some today is Mothers Day. For some today is graduation. For Delali Dogbe it is Mothers Day. For her son Kelvin Garner it is his graduation from Whitworth College. They celebrated this day together at the North Central Care Center.

Do you remember the Whitworth freshman from Ghana whose story appeared in the March 1, 2011 issue of the Whitworthian? Since June 6, 2009 Kelvin has been semi-comatose. His mother, who left Ghana immediately when she heard of his accident, has been by his side for nearly three years.

We will be continuing Kelvin’s story later this week. Watch for future posts.
