A Change to Spokane NAACP

On December 23 the Spokane chapter of the NAACP held a strategy meeting where the president-elect Rachel Dolezal presented a PowerPoint of her suggested organizational structure and suggested officers for the new year. It was obvious looking at the room that there is new interest in the organization. See links to older 4comculture posts and pages regarding NAACP activity and compare them to posts of activity since Ferguson. I think this is the beginning of a new movement with a much younger and energetic group.  Only time will tell. I would encourage those under 40 to join the civic engagement and that we older folks stay home and send a check to support the youth.

Historical Note: When Dr. King joined the Montgomery Bus Boycott he was 26 years old. When he died he was 39 years old. Below are photographs of the SCLC field staff who were all in their late teens and early 20’s.

Anthony Boccaccio EXHIBIT AT INTERPLAYERS THEATER

Featuring internationally acclaimed photographer, artist and adventurer Anthony Boccaccio. Anthony began his photographic career with National Geographic Magazine in 1971. He has recently published a photographic book about the search for gold in the Amazonian Jungle.

The opening of Tony’s exhibition was superb in so many ways. Tony, always
volubile and socially engaging, was in top form, greeting the numerous attendees and sharing anecdotes about the images and their creation. The images are wonderful, it is especially encouraging to view this exhibit here in Spokane. Chris Crisostomo, who modeled for several of the images, is a personable fellow who is exceptionally graceful in his movements and gestures… just a treat to see him at various times in the evening. No wonder Tony asked him to model.

If you missed the opening, please be aware that you can view the images any time during the day when the Interplayers box office is open… it is free and open to the public.
Amazing visions, excellently executed, you owe it to yourself to take the time…

On the last Thursday of each month a group of a dozen or so Spokane photographers meet over pizza and beer to share their recent works. This last Thursday we met at the home of Tony Boccaccio who shared his recently published book WHERE MADNESS FOLLOWS. He has been photographing Amazon gold mining camps since 1971.

The Magic Lantern Showing Leonid Bergoltsev Film

Sitting Between Two Chairs tells the story of world renowned Russian photojournalist Leonid Bergoltsev, who documented the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War and is now living in America without possibility of returning to his homeland.  His work is often compared to Henri Cartier-Bresson, with whom he was acquainted, and he was published in Life Magazine in 1972 Mr. Bergoltsev offers testimony to the possibility that the photography of the Soviet Era  just might be more truthful than the imagery seen in contemporary American media.

He is a man stuck between two cultures who makes interesting comparisons between film and digital photography and Communism and Capitalism with wit, passion, and conviction.

I have the honor of one of my video projects being shown at this year’s film festival at the Magic Lantern Theater on Sunday February 10th at 4:15pm. It is a short video about Leonid Bergoltsev who is a phenomenal photojournalist from Moscow who happens to live here in Spokane. I would love to have you all attend. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Celebrations 2013

The Annual Commemorative Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was held last Sunday, January 20, 2013, at the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. The annual march was held the next day beginning with speeches by political and civic leaders at the Convention Center. The march ended at Riverpark Square with a performance by Michael Moonbear. Many agencies and nongovernmental organizations had information tables.

Bob and Jay’s Walk

Jay, a friend and photographer, asked if we could walk together some time. In early March my Euro-American friend and I walked the Manito Park – Cannon Hill Park Loop. It was a mild between seasons sort of day. The duck pond at Manito Park was still frozen but very little snow. The Cannon Hill pond was not frozen but no new greenery was yet to be seen. The Japanese Garden was still closed for the winter. We saw many joggers, dog walkers, family groups, and bicyclists enjoying the day. Everyone was smiling and welcoming, but Bob was the only African American to be seen.
